Appliances That We Service

Refrigerators
According to Statista, GE has a market share of 17% in the United States, followed closely by Frigidaire with 16%. The average lifespan of a refrigerator is in the 10-15 year range, although some can last over 20 years. Common problems that we encounter include:
- Water leaking onto floor
- Refrigerator not cold enough
- Ice make overflowing
- Water dispenser not working
These problems can all have several causes. There are a couple things that you should check before calling us for service. Check the setting of your thermostat. The recommended temperature setting is 40 degrees Fahrenheit for the refrigerator and 0 degrees Fahrenheit for the freezer. If you have an icemaker or water dispenser in your refrigerator, manufacturers recommend changing the water filter every six months. When you purchase a replacement filter, make sure it fits your particular brand and model.

Freezers
While most people just use the freezer section of their refrigerator, some purchase a separate freezer, often called a deep freezer. These typically last slightly longer than refrigerators, usually in the 12-20 year range.
Common freezer problems include:
- Frost buildup
- Leaking water
- Inadequate cooling
- Odd noises
Frost buildup is due to a problem in the automatic defrost cycle – Either the timer, heater or thermostat. The most likely cause of leaking water is a blocked drain which blocks the flow of water during the defrost cycle. Inadequate cooling could have a number of causes, such as a damaged door seal, bad thermostat or a loss of fluid in the cooling system. If your freezer starts to make odd noises, it could be a problem with the fan motor.

Ranges
Ovens typically last around 15 years, and gas stoves usually last a few years longer than electric ones. Common problems with ranges include:
- Gas burner won’t light
- Electric burner won’t heat up
- Oven won’t heat up
- Oven door won’t shut
- Oven won’t maintain proper temperature
The most likely cause of a gas burner not igniting is a bad igniter, but their could also be a break in the wiring. If an electric burner won’t heat up it is probably due to a bad switch, socket or the burner itself. If the oven won’t heat up, it’s generally a bad igniter for a gas stove, or the heating element on an electric one. An oven door that doesn’t close properly may be caused by bad hinges or broken springs. If an oven heats but doesn’t maintain the proper temperature, the temperature sensor may need replacement.

Microwaves
The average lifespan of a microwave oven is only 7-10 years. Because of their low cost and relatively short life, we don’t repair a lot of microwaves. However, if you have a higher end model that is relatively new, it probably makes sense to repair it.

Dishwashers
Good Housekeeping rated the Miele AutoDos G7566 Smart Dishwasher as the best on the market for 2022. Considering it costs over two grand, it ought to be. For those of us on a more modest budget, they rated the Frigidaire Gallery 24” Built-in Dishwasher with EvenDry as the best value.
Average dishwashers last between 7 and 12 years. Common problems they may encounter are:
- Dishes not getting clean
- Dishes not drying
- Water leaks onto the floor
If your dishes aren’t coming out clean, there are several possible causes of that. Before calling us for service, make sure that your dishes aren’t blocking the spray arms from spinning. If they aren’t coming out dry, that’s probably due to a malfunctioning heating element or high limit thermostat. Water leaks are likely due to a bad door gasket or float switch.

Washing Machines
Washing machines normally last 10-14 years. Common problems include:
- Leaking water
- Washer won’t fill with water
- Washer won’t spin
Leaking water may be due to a blocked drain or problems with the inlet hoses. Worn hose washers may also cause leaks. If your washer won’t fill with water, check to make sure it is plugged in and the inlet hose valves are open. Also, some models won’t fill unless the lid is closed. Before calling us about a washer that won’t spin, be sure to check and make certain that you haven’t overloaded the machine and the load is reasonable balanced.

Dryers
Dryers usually have a lifespan just a tad shorter than washers. Common problems that they may experience are:
- Won’t run
- Vibration / Noise
- Doesn’t dry clothes
If your dryer won’t run, be sure that is plugged in before you call us. Vibration / noise issues could be due to worn bearings or other parts. If it doesn’t dry your clothes sufficiently, a bad heating element is the likely culprit.
Always clean your lint filter before or after each use. Otherwise the lint will impede air flow, making your dryer work harder. This will use more electricity or gas and shorten the life of your dryer.

Meet John, Owner of Taggart Appliance Repair in Indianapolis

John Taggart is the owner and chief technician of Taggart Appliance Repair. His childhood was spent down in Spencer County, Indiana. He proudly served his country in the Army from 2004 to 2010, where he performed helicopter maintenance. These copters ran the gamut from the little OH-58 to the fearsome AH-64 Apache to the big, twin-rotor CH-47 Chinook. John was twice deployed to Iraq and also spent time in Korea.
After leaving the armed forces he continued to perform aviation maintenance in the private sector. Most of this was on fixed-wing aircraft like the P-8 Poseidon or the Boeing-737. His aircraft maintenance background has taught him to be thorough and do things by the book. Let’s face it, a leaky dishwasher is a pain in the butt, but an engine problem at 30,000 feet is a lot more serious. John has brought that attention to detail from his aviation background to appliance repair.
